Injectable Fillers Q & A

What are injectable facial fillers?

Injectable facial fillers are used to improve the appearance of skin by reducing wrinkles, creases, and sagging caused by fat and tissue loss. Sun exposure, muscle movement, age, and genetics can all contribute to diminished skin appearance.

Dr. Bush uses different injectables for various regions of the face, including the eyes and lips. He injects facial fillers into the skin via small injection sites to boost volume and reduce deep lines, wrinkles, and folds.

What injectable facial fillers are available?

Many types of injectables are available depending on the area of your face being treated. Dr. Bush offers the following injectable facial fillers at the practice:

  • BOTOX -- made from a neurotoxin, botulinum toxin type A, that temporarily paralyzes the affected muscles to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
  • JUVÉDERM -- made from hyaluronic acid, which is naturally occurring in the body and can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and creases.
  • RADIESSE® -- improves volume and stimulates natural collagen production to boost appearance over time.
  • JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC -- a filler used to increase volume in the cheeks.
  • Restylane -- a hyaluronic acid-based facial fillers that helps smooth wrinkles and plump your cheeks and lips
  • Sculptra -- an injectable cosmetic filler that can be used to restore loss of facial volume due to aging or illness

Most injectable procedures take only about 10 to 20 minutes to complete, and you should be able to return to normal activities immediately following the treatment.

How do injectable cosmetic procedures work?

Though grouped together as injectable procedures, the products use a variety of treatment strategies to approach different facial conditions. Depending on the product, injectables can treat:

  • Submental fullness (fat stores under the chin)
  • Active wrinkles, caused by muscles used for facial expressions
  • Passive wrinkles, due to loss of skin elasticity and support tissue
  • Lost facial fullness, resulting from natural deterioration of collagen

How do injectables treat fat under the chin?

Your double chin is a storage area for fat that you can’t eliminate through the traditional methods of diet and exercise. For some people, there seems to be a genetic element as well. Fat simply collects under the chin, regardless of overall levels of fitness.

Kybella® is an injectable that has deoxycholic acid as an active ingredient. That acid occurs naturally in the body, as an agent for the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When it’s injected into the double-chin area, Kybella destroys fat cells, and your circulatory system gradually removes them. Your chin takes on a smoother profile, and those fat cells are gone for good.

What are the side effects of facial fillers?

Facial fillers are safe, and you should experience no or minimal side effects following the procedure.

Some potential side effects include infection or small nodules appearing at the injection site. These conditions can be treated with antibiotics or steroid injection and aren't serious.

Dr. Bush and the team will explain the risks of facial filler injectables before starting the procedure.
