Botox Q & A

What is BOTOX?

BOTOX injections are a form of botulinum toxin that temporarily paralyzes muscle activity and thus reduces the appearance of some types of facial wrinkles. It is also used to treat problems, such as excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), repetitive neck spasms (cervical dystonia), lazy eye, and overactive bladder. BOTOX injections also help prevent chronic migraines in some patients.

What can BOTOX treat?

Dr. Bush recommends BOTOX for several cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Glabellar or frown lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Bunny Lines
  • Smile lines
  • Chin dimples
  • Platysma lines
  • Marionette lines
  • Crow’s feet

How exactly does BOTOX work on wrinkles?

Repeated muscle contractions in your face — used to lift your brows, squint your eyes, and frown — cause wrinkles and creases in your skin that eventually become permanent over time. BOTOX disrupts the nerve signals from your brain that control muscular function. This relaxes the muscles temporarily, causing mild to moderate wrinkles and lines to fade.

The desired goal of BOTOX cosmetic treatment is to restrict muscular activity to the point of decreasing lines while leaving you with a natural-appearing expression. Too much BOTOX injected in the wrong places can create an asymmetrical or wooden effect that’s far from natural. Dr. Bush’s medical background provides him with the skills necessary to help prevent that unwanted side effect.

What should I expect from BOTOX treatment?

A BOTOX injection procedure typically takes roughly 10 minutes. Dr. Bush will assist you in determining what type of treatment should be employed by discussing your goals and skin care routines. No anesthesia is necessary as he delivers the BOTOX via injection with fine needles that cause only minor discomfort, if any.

Patients will achieve younger looking skin without losing the ability to express their emotions on their face. Very little downtime is required for BOTOX and the treatment can usually be performed during a lunch hour. Within 24 to 48 hours, results should be visible and they should last for approximately four months.

The number of injections you receive during the session depends on the conditions you’re concerned about. If you’re interested in addressing your crow’s feet, you typically require three injections at the outer corners of the eyes. Frown lines are usually resolved with five injections at various points of the forehead. Dr. Bush generally recommends treating multiple areas during one session to help ensure symmetrical alterations to your expression.
