IPL Photo Rejuvenation Q & A

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatments for Photorejuvenation

Intense pulsed light (IPL) technology is a highly versatile and effective modality that can be used to treat various conditions, including:

  • Vascular conditions (burst blood vessels)
  •  Hypertrichosis
  • Pigmented lesions (dark spots, age spots, blemishes, freckles)
  • Stretch marks
  • Birthmarks
  • Epidermal and dermal atrophy associated with photodamage
  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Actinic keratosis

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a technology used in various skin treatments, including hair removal and photofacials. A handheld flashgun is passed across the skin, delivering a broad spectral range of light that targets hair, vascular abnormalities and other skin issues. Treatment is also known as laser skin rejuvenation and photo rejuvenation.

The IPL Treatment Process (Lunch-time makeover)

These treatments generally last no longer than 30 minutes and only require that you wear protective goggles to protect your eyes from the IPL energy. Dr. Bush will use a hand-held device to go over your skin and focus on specific areas to rejuvenate the skin from photodamage, pigment, and vascular abnormalities. As the skin cells absorb energy, collagen fibers are tightened to reduce lax skin, causing the damaged cells to start the metabolization process so that new cells can replace them.  IPL is one of the most powerful tools in our armamentarium to tackle stubborn pigmentation problems.  By focusing its energy on the melanin or pigment in the cells it decreases melanin production thereby normalizing irregularities in skin tones.  This gives the skin a very uniform appearance.  And this is why we like to refer to this treatment as a “photofacial”. It gives you a Cover Girl appearance without the airbrush!

You will begin to see these changes after a few months with continued improvement after every treatment. The treatment causes a slight rosiness but there is no recovery time required.   After the treatment, we do recommend specific moisturizers and a skin care plan to protect the newly treated skin.

Dr. Ronald B. Bush recommends three to five treatments for optimal results as best results can be seen after several treatments, spaced out every four to six weeks. The benefits of photo rejuvenation treatments are achieved with little discomfort and minimal risk. Our clients love the fact that no recovery time is required so they can go right back to work after their IPL treatment.
