Winter is the Best Time to Rejuvenate Your Skin With a Fractional CO2 Laser Treatment

Rejuvenate with a fractional laser treatment

Have you ever driven down a freshly-paved road, marveling at the smoothness of the surface, especially compared to the bumpy ride it used to offer? That’s essentially what we can do for your skin this winter with fractional CO2 laser treatment.

At RB Laser Lipo & Aesthetics, we help our clients in the area of Palm Desert, California, get the best out of their skin with the latest evidence-based products and services that provide real results. While the effects of age and wear-and-tear may be piling up on the surface of your skin, it’s a surface that we can treat and clear away to pave the way for smoother, unblemished skin.

If you’d like to get a jump on spring through fractional CO2 laser resurfacing this winter, here’s what you need to know.

What happened?

The aging process on your skin begins slowly and then starts to ramp up with each passing year. Before you know it, your face may begin to look more like a roadmap of your life, rather than the fresh, clear surface of your youth, full of possibilities.

The reason for this is manyfold, starting with exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. In a process known as photoaging, the cells in your skin are damaged by the radiation in the sun’s UV rays, which breaks them down exponentially faster than they would normally break down.

Now couple this with the normal wear-and-tear that your skin endures in its role as protector and shield. From flying objects to acne-causing bacteria, your skin undergoes a fair amount of abuse, and the battle scars can begin to add up.

The final assault on your skin comes from below — a loss of structural proteins. Elastin and collagen are the two primary proteins responsible for the elasticity and tone in your skin. As you age, their production naturally slows, which means your skin is unable to keep up with repairs as it once did.

Taken all together, these forces leave your skin blemished, discolored, and lined with wrinkles.

A fresh start

Just like the road we mentioned above, our CO2 laser clears away parts of the old surface to make way for a smoother, more even, surface. The CO2 fractional laser relies on a mid-infrared wavelength of energy. The “fractional” part of the name means it delivers tiny beams of energy into your skin that create microcolumns of injury surrounded by untouched normal tissue. As a result of these microwounds, your body works to clear away dead and damaged skin cells, break apart scar tissue, and increase collagen production, creating a fine meshwork of new support.

The key to this treatment is that we’re able to control the amount of CO2 laser energy we deliver into your skin, sending just enough to clear away the damage, but not enough to traumatize your skin, sending it into a full-on healing response. In fact, it’s just this response that begets scar tissue. Instead, we stimulate a mild healing response, which means that your skin will regenerate and repair itself in a way that gently resurfaces your skin for a more youthful complexion.

The process

One of the greatest benefits of skin resurfacing with our CO2 fractional laser system is that it’s minimally invasive, which means there’s no downtime afterward. After your treatment, there may be some redness and flaking as your old skin cells clear out, but this will quickly dissipate as your new skin underneath comes to light.

Since this laser treatment works with your body to rebuild your skin, it takes a little time — generally 6-12 weeks. In the weeks following your treatment, your body processes and flushes away scar tissue, areas of hyperpigmentation, and other blemishes. New collagen is produced and takes over to give your skin more elasticity and tone.

The ideal time for this treatment is during the winter months when the sun is low and you can protect your results more easily. It also means that, by the time spring and summer roll around, you’ll be greeting these seasons with a fresh new outlook.
