Is There a Right Age for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Lying on the beach all day without sunscreen may have seemed like a good idea when you were younger. But as sunspots, fine lines, and skin laxity show up in your 30s or 40s, you may wish you would’ve protected yourself better.

Although the weather in Palm Desert, California, feels like summer all year round, it’s probably aging your skin more than you know. In fact, the sun’s harmful rays are responsible for 90% of visible skin aging.

Ronald Bush, MD, and our team at RB Laser Lipo & Aesthetics, provide laser resurfacing to patients who want a more youthful complexion. Here we explain everything you need to know about laser resurfacing, including what age is the right time to start it.

How it works

As the name indicates, laser skin resurfacing uses a CO2 laser to send pulsating light beams deep into the tissues of your damaged skin. Laser skin resurfacing removes the outer layer of your skin, called the epidermis, along with other damaged skin areas.

By encouraging cellular turnover and collagen production, the laser addresses a variety of skin care concerns like:

Most laser skin resurfacing treatments take about 45 minutes and can be used on areas like your face, chest, back, and neck.

Understanding the right age

Everyone’s skin is different, so age is irrelevant when it comes to laser resurfacing. Any patient over the age of eighteen can undergo laser resurfacing.

Younger patients who have acne scars may get treated in their teens, while people in their twenties may wish to improve superficial fine lines. Many laser treatments show great efficacy when treating younger tissues, so it’s never too early to start.

Laser resurfacing is more common among patients who have reached their middle years as a way to turn back the clock. As skin discoloration and skin laxity become concerning, laser technology can give you brighter, younger-looking skin.

After care

Most patients need 3-4 treatments spaced about a month apart to get the results they want. You must follow these aftercare tips to ensure you get the best results from your treatment.

It’s normal to experience some redness, swelling, and mild burning immediately after your procedure. This can be addressed by applying ice packs or a bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a hand towel. You can take an over-the-counter medication like ibuprofen, if needed.

During the first night, sleep with your head elevated on multiple pillows to reduce swelling. Several times a day, apply a thin layer of the post-procedure healing balm given to you by Dr. Bush. This helps to keep your skin moist.

Wait one day to cleanse your face and only use a mild cleanser. As your skin heals, you’ll notice it feels dry, so use a gentle moisturizer to help keep it comfortable.

Avoid sun exposure for 4-6 weeks following your treatment and apply a broad spectrum SPF of 30 or greater every day for three months. Most patients experience 4-7 days of downtime and gradually see their results appear over the next month or two.
